Nelson-A20203ParticipantIt is well-talked about here in my country that American society is full of psychopaths and nut cases. Here we have killers, of course, but they are muggers, thieves, narcs and crooks, but there are no psycho-killers, serial killers or any other homicidal Clark Kents or Ward Cleavers. I have my theories, which are based on the aggressive “Don’t talk to strangers,” “Mind your own business “and Get offa my property” attitudes of American society, but I’m not a sociologist. I would like to read the opinion of experts on this subject.

Don25603ParticipantYou obviously need a reality break. One, wash that media out of your ears, and two, sell your television for a plane ticket to California, and explain to me why the jails here are 80 percent Latino populated.

VictorMemberTo Don: Your response didn’t address any of the questions you were responding to. My unscientific opinion is that there is more mental illness here in the US and that’s part of the price paid for a high octane culture. So there would seem to be more of the so-called ‘psycho killings.’ Multiple killings by the mentally ill in other countries is much rarer. The second part of your answer is just an insult. Even if 80% of the prison population in CA were Latino, they are still–I’m sure–mostly Americans of Latin descent. Besides most aren’t in because of psycho killings.

A.C.C.ParticipantDon, take a break from US media yourself and all its relentless promotion of America as the greatest nation in absolutely every aspect of life. My sisters and in laws routinely walked around alone late at night in Mexico, Central American, the Phillipines, and Japan, something they wouldn’t dare try here in the US. If you travel anywhere outside the US, it’s pretty obvious right away that most Americans are more hostile than most people in other countries. Most serial killers in the world are like yourself, American white males in their thirties. Some reason for this should be obvious: high availability of guns, a history and culture that sees violence as the solution to any problem, high mobility of and alienation among the population, a lack of community and a strong belief in getting ahead no matter how much you have to step on other people. One final point, Latinos (and blacks) make up most of the jail population, but most crime is committed by whites, simply because the US is 80% white. It’s been extremely well documented that the darker you are, the harsher your sentence.

Lucy HParticipantI don’t know how accurate Don’s statistics are regarding California prison populations. Althought the percentage of Latinos in California jails is high, much higher than the percentage of Latinos in the general population, I don’t believe that Latinos make up 80 percent of the prison population. But that is not why I take exception to his comments. I take exception to his comments because he implies that Latinos aren’t Americans. The majority of Latinos in the United States were either born here, or have become naturalized U.S. citizens; therefore they are Americans. And our prisons are not filled with people from other countries; the vast majority of prison inmates are Americans.

Murray C.ParticipantFor the most part, I think you are right: American society is full of psychopaths and nut cases. I think it’s because of two things: 1) A huge population. The more people there are, the more nut cases you’re going to get. Many of these people who need help end up falling through the cracks as far as getting care because there just aren’t enough (professional) people to help them. 2) Guns. They have always been a problem in the United States. They like beating that outdated Constitution of theirs to death. It’s a shame that any nut-case can get a gun.
My defense for these comments? I live in Canada. We are literally next door to the United States, and we don’t have nearly half the problems Americans do. Sure, we have nut cases and killings here, but because of our small population, most nut cases are able to get help and be kept away from harming society. And as far as guns go, it’s no contest. We just don’t believe in them.

Benjamin C.MemberOur psychopaths are also muggers, thieves, narcs and crooks. They also pop up in everyday life in otherwise ‘normal’ roles here, as I’m sure they do in your country. Psychopathic illnesses occur without regard to nationality. However, we have a media culture that is often centered on providing us with the worst news possible (to get better ratings). If something terrible happens, we hear about it for weeks. And because our media is often broadcast to the rest of the world, you probably hear about it, too. I offer several examples that psychopathic tendencies are not an inherently American affliction: Adolf Hitler, Joesph Stalin and Saddam Hussein.

Oisin CommaneParticipantLast month a naked man walked into a South London church with a sword and began attacking the parishioners. In the US he would have had a gun and someone would have died. George Harrison, the ex-Beatle, was attacked with a knife in his home this week. In the US he would have gone the way of John Lennon. America doesn’t have more crazy people it has 200 million firearms so when people crack they can do serious damage. In the UK guns are illegal. Not even the police, apart from in Northern Ireland and at airports, are armed. The US also has the worst public health system in the West so crazy people are more likely to slip through the net. They are less likely to be given a social worker to monitor them or the correct medications.
