I represent the Decatur, Illinois Police Dept., and my current assignment is that of Recruiting Officer. My duties include trying to convince qualified people to apply to be a police officer here in Decatur. I strongly believe a govermental agency such as a police dept. should reflect it’s community. Since our African American population is around 20% I would like to see the numbers in our dept. reflect that? At present our numbers are below 10%! Can someone give me any pointers on recruiting qualified African American applicants? At present I am going to African American colleges, asking African American churches for help, putting ads in local African American newspapers all with ‘poor’ results! Thanks!
