C-ButlerMemberWith issues such as anorexia, bulimia and disease-induced weight loss, why don’t Americans embrace the overweight population like people in other countries do?

BruceMemberThere are the thin, the moderate and the obese. In order to be “different,” a person may go in for either thinness or obesity. This probably is not a conscious decision. It could also be the result of not having enough will to plan out a good diet, or a result of medication, slow metabolism, depression or a number of other causes.

AlyssaMemberI think it is terrible the way American society puts an emphasis on looking a certain way. Rather than being taught that being beautiful is important, we should be taught to love and accept who we are as a person. We should be taught to be ourselves, to be unique. That fundamental idea is what our society lacks. Yes, we should embrace the overweight population, but we should also embrace people who are thin, average, tall, short, etc. Furthermore, how we look should not be the emphasis. Some people are naturally tall and thin. Being a female who is 6’1″ and weighs 135 pounds, I am one of them. Does that mean I should not be embraced because of how I look? I hope not. Put the emphasis on the person, not their body.

PW30331Member‘Overweight people often fall under the same misconception…That their condition is a choice. […]obesity is still often viewed as a ‘choice’ – that fat individuals suffer from an unhealthy lack of self-control.’ But it IS a choice! Nobody can claim that they don’t know what causes them to be fat: overeating and/or underexercising. All the whining about slow metabolisms, or blaming our car-based economy, is just that. Food doesn’t just fall into your mouth, being fat is a lifestyle choice. If you choose to be fat, that’s fine. However, don’t expect me to validate your choice by giving you special treatment. To me, being fat is incredibly unattractive, and a sign of personal laziness: it’s exactly like not brushing your teeth, or wearing dirty clothes just because you can’t be bothered to clean them. I wouldn’t say that in person (I’m rude, but not THAT rude), but that’s what I’m thinking.
