I think this notion that whites are threatened by educated blacks is absurd. Sure, there are a lot of diehard racists out there who are going to be threatened by you regardless but I think you’ll find the vast majority of whites would be a lot happier if the vast majority of blacks were educated. Honestly, if ‘too many blacks are educated’ was the prevailing issue in our society, imagine what a wonderful country this would be. On the contrary I think what threatens a lot more of us white folks is the tendency for so many black youths to adopt counter culture, to glorify the gangsta rapper lifestyle, to hold their hands over their crotches to protect an invisible gun, to walk with fake limps and glower menancingly in a deliberate attempt to be intimidating. And then… to turn around and scoff at the fact that whites are intimidated and prejudiced against them. Anyhow, to get back on topic, saying whites are threatened by your education and success is just another subtle excuse to avoid education and success or worse, sabotage yourself once you get either of these things. I imagine if you have the notion that your white co-workers are threatened by you, you pretty much wear this belief on your face and it shows in your attitude and before you know it you have what us college educated folks like to call a ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’. Maybe your white co-workers aren’t threatened by you at all. Maybe they’re just bored of your attitutde and don’t like you. On a personal note, I work and associate with a lot of educated blacks whom I do not find threatening in any way whatsoever. One of my best friends is educated and black although I tease him that he is ‘whiter than I am’ thanks to his inability to dance, play sports or endure rap music. My neighbor is an educated black man and a far more enjoyable conversationalist than the redneck old white guy who used to be. In fact, I find educated blacks to be quite a breath of fresh air as they relieve my bigoted, racist, white fear that one day I will be living in a world of Snoop Doggs and forced to speak ebonics.
