I think it’s probably got something to do with your name. Oh, wait a minute, I’m a Derek, too. It could be a lot of things – ranging from clinical depression, for which you should probably get help – to simply being different to the folks around you. Some of it is self-confidence – I have to admit that things got a lot better once I got in shape when I was about 20, but that was probably more about how I felt about myself than how other folks saw me. Some of it is just finding other folks who are interested in the same stuff you are or who think the same way. You’d be amazed at the wonderful varieties of weirdos you can find on the Internet, and I mean that in the most postiive way possible. In the meantime, all I can say is hang in there, try to find other people who share your interests, and be up front with them rather than assume they know what you’re feeling (or that they don’t). And anyone named Derek has to turn out okay (I hope, for my sake).
