The issue here is really separation of church and state. I respect the fact that some religions oppose homosexuality on a ‘spiritual’ level and prohibit religiously sanctioned same sex marriages. I have the choice as a lesbian of not participating in their spiritual practices and my rights there are my own choice. I resent the hell out of the fact that for the last 4 years the current administration has fought to blur those state/church lines by incorporating into law personal values and spiritual beliefs based on what they term ‘moral values’. Moral values are as individual as each human being and based on upbringing, personal beliefs, experiences and faith (or even a lack of!) We as citizens (gay or straight) should have the right to live our moral values without interference from the government. Here’s a prime example: In North Carolina, there is a church (one of many in Appalachia) where the congregation live their faith and achieve a spiritual experience by handling poisonous snakes during revival style services, trusting the Lord will keep them safe by virtue of their faith. Why isn’t the government stepping in to shut down these religious institutions, which clearly exhibit more danger of real personal injury or death than a same sex couple committing to vows that bind them for life in a civil ceremony? Keep your faith with my blessing, discriminatory or not. Stay the hell out of my civil rights as a lesbian and worry about what your kid is doing on their computer before you worry about who I might be marrying at a government office.
