It shouldn’t take an Australian to explain the “Reagan Democrat” phenomenon: these were poor people who would have traditionally supported the Democrats, but voted for Reagan because of his social conservatism, which appealed to them, ‘family values,’ etc. Those people probably supported Bush for the same reason.
