Let me first say that I do not consider myself any particular religion now because I hate the way religions put people against each other, this subject being one great example. I love everyone, of every faith, and I’m very open-minded. Knowing as much about the Mormon faith as I know, I must say that although I don’t agree with everything regarding their faith, the Mormons have been very misunderstood for a long time. Anyway, here is the answer as I’ve come to understand it. There was never a time when African Americans were not able to join the church, but until 1978, African Americans were not allowed to hold the priethood. To this day though, women are not allowed to hold the priesthood either. Why? I don’t know. I guess just ‘because God said so’ or something. When you think about it though, when’s the last time you saw a black or female pope? The ‘racist’ beginnings started because slavery was a big issue in early Mormon persecutions, but only because Mormons refused to have slaves. They were probably the only Christian Church at that time which actually did reject the idea of slavery. The racist accusations on Mormons by other religions have continued because of the whole priesthood thing which I told you about earlier, but many of those same religions ignore the fact that African Americans were not even allowed to attend some of their churches at all. Funny how stories get twisted, huh?
