melissaParticipantUm, I perceive God as any other christian would, the ultimate being and creator of us all. I mean visually I dont know what he looks like, no living man has seen the face of God, while the media, culture and church artists probly give you the face of an old white guy with gray hair, I dont think we are capable of even comprehending a visual of God himself. For that matter the original hebrew books of the bible never referred to God as a HE, so who is to say that God is neither maan nor woman, but something far greater. As far as what most blacks beleive, because i think that is closer to your question I, was raised in christian churches of baptist, methodist, episcopal, and african methodist epicopal(lol) denominiations. Because miami is a more mixed area than where im originally from I now go to a non denominational christian church w/ people of many other races. Black christians, like all christians, beleive man was created in gods image(if we all are so different, how could he just be white or black), that christ is the son of God sent to earth to die for our sins and give us salvation if we beleive in him. While I had heard people say christ was black, due to physical description in the bible, that his skin was the color of bronze and his hair like lambswool, I beleive that him being a hebrew male living in the middle east, he would look much more like any isreali you see on tv than the european blonde blue eyed portrait in so many churches, books, homes, etc. The answer to your question on how blacks perceive God is that we perceive God as similarily to whites as Asian, hispanic, Arabic people would depending on the individuals religion. How do you perceive God, I think it is a matter of how someone was raised and what exposure they had that shapes their views and perception. I would need much more space to go into side areas like catholic saint-based voodoo, hispanic santeria, snake chuches or other ‘occult’ beliefs that are comparable to ‘white’ religons like scientology, wicca, etc. If you have any other questions you could email me.
