First, I think the word should be “mutilation.” It is a cultural belief that this procedure will keep the woman from deriving pleasure from sex – thereby ensuring the “purity” of the family line and deterring the female from “straying.” It would be presumptous of us to tell people in Africa what they should not do; but if they are in the United States, it certainly should be illegal, as is any other type of forced mutilation
