Mormons believe that after this life there is a waiting period where the body rests in death and the spirit enters the next existence. In this place those spirits who have finished their essential spiritual growth will work with (teach and minister) to those who have not yet finished their spiritual growth. It could be said that this dichotomy represents heaven and hell, but that would probably be an over statement, as well as an extreme simplification. After this period there will be a resurrection of the body – Through the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ this is a benefit to all regardless of how they lived their life in mortality. Following this there is an individual judgement which will be predicated on the life of the person, the choices made, and sins repented of (and forgiven through the atonement of Christ.) At this time the person will be assigned to one of several rewards, sometimes called Kingdoms or Glories. Of these, the highest allows that resurrected men and women will be allowed to continue in their marriage relationship, and to continue in their posterity. Some will also go to this kingdom who were otherwise qualified, but who did not choose Eternal Marriage in mortality. These will live here in a non-married state. Second to that is a kingdom where those go who were honorable and just in life, but who did not receive or desire the ordinances of Christianity – Baptism and the Holy Ghost – by the proper authority, until after they died. This presumes that they had a chance during their mortality to do so. (They will not be unjustly penalized if that opportunity was not theirs in mortality.) Third is a kingdom that will receive most of the others who were not just or fair in life. These are said to be those who rob and kill and steal and so forth. Those who have wilfully harmed others and never repented. Not much more is said about this place. Finally there is a place for the most wicked – those who have shed innocent blood, or who have had a perfect knowledge of the truth about Christ and have rebelled against it. This kingdom is a place of no glory, and is sometimes called ‘Outer Darkness.’ It is said that only those who go there will know what it is like.
