I think it’s because most black people come from tougher backgrounds and, when it’s a privilege to have a car in the first place, you ‘roll it till the wheels fall off.’ It’s sort of like making the best of what you have, showing off what you can get, and still staying true to the hood by making that otherwise crappy car a soul-masterpiece. It’s kind of like when white guys raise their trucks 5 feet off the ground, or Latinos lower their cars to the floor, or Asians trick out Hondas.
