Teresa19776ParticipantPerhaps these teenagers lack confidence? Teen years are the most awkward, with all the pressure to ‘find yourself’ and manage puberty. The mumbling teenagers still probably have under-developed social skills–the transition from childhood to adulthood is fast and often doesn’t give plenty of time for ‘trial and error’ in such matters, for example, as in speaking clearly so people can understand. And of course many teenagers try to deal with themselves and the world by ‘disengaging’ themselves. In that case the mumblers probably don’t know or don’t care that they’re mumbling because it all doesn’t matter. The ‘disengaged’ image is cool to some teenagers, so many more might try to imitate that attitude.
