TariqahParticipantI would like to point out that the fact that one is of Arab nationality does not make them a Muslim. The word ‘Muslim’ in Arabic is from the root ‘salama,’ which means ‘peace.’ Thus, a Muslim is one who attains peace through submission to the will of God. Many atrocities were committed by Pagan Arabs, and slavery was a widespread practice in Arabia before the advent of Islam. After the revelation of the message of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad regulated slavery, and entreated the people to treat slaves with kindness, and told them of the great reward of freeing a slave. In fact, Muhammad had even given one of his daughters in marriage to one of his freed slaves. So is one who commits such atrocities, according to the definition I gave, a Muslim? Surely one who submits to the will of God does not kill or degrade others in the name of their religion.
