T.R.ParticipantThere are only a handful of non-whites in Bush’s administration, and he purposefully makes an effort to ‘advertise’ these folks in order to create the illusion of diversity (how many of us remember Clinton’s foreign advisor?). But Bush’s administration is still largely white and male, just as both houses of Congress are still largely white and male. White males still comprise much of the leadership of this country in business, education and governmental spheres. Yet white males are the numerical minority. So I disagree with your assertion that whites as a whole are getting the short shrift in favor of other groups. For the most part, the ‘good ole boy’ network is still in full effect.

T.R.ParticipantOften, groups of black people – especially youths – feel unfairly singled out when white people ‘hush’ them, and sometimes this feeling is justified. Many times when I’m using public transportation, I’ve seen people get irritated by the loud banter of black kids, but then ignore or even smile at a group of white kids carrying on in a similar fashion. Black kids are more likely to be harassed by security at a mall, for instance, while white kids will go undetected. Instances like these – whether truly experienced or merely heard about – make groups of black kids suspicious of attempts to quiet them. That said, exhuberant expression – sometimes loud – is a cultural thing.
