SymeonParticipantWe’re not! I dated a few black girls growing up in Dallas and even took one to Prom in high school. However, when we would go to a restaurant, it was as if everyone stopped eating and stared when we came in. My prom date got a lot of grief from our fellow students (stuff written on her locker, etc.). I almost got beat up at a Rick James concert (she was oh, so beautiful!). Of course, that’s part of the South. I think the fear lies in the reaction of society and our peers. There’s some fear of different culture, too. Here in the deep south, black girls don’t seem to be really open to dating white guys. I think, however, that it boils down to the heart and some intelligence.

SymeonParticipantThe Orthodox Church, of course, views rape and battery as wrong. In essence, the Holy Fathers teach us that everything that ‘happens’ to us is an opportunity to grow closer to Christ. Any traumatic event like that, however, requires careful, intense, pastoral care. Much depends on the spiritual state of the person. A priest should certainly be involved in that person’s rehabilitation, as well as a loving, prayerful community. As for personal cleanliness, the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and should be treated as such. Waste should certainly be disposed of. I’m not sure what you mean by that. These sound like symptoms of spiritual sickness that can come from such a tragic event. The Holy Fathers teach us that despair is the worst state that one can fall into. That’s why she needs the support of her priest and community. Perhaps most of all, she needs prayer.
