Stephen-SParticipantIn many cultures the circle is a symbol of eternity. The diamond, recognized as the hardest natural substance, can also be seen as eternal. These symbols — the ring and the diamond — signify the hope that the union will last forever. Of course, in a country where the divorce rate hovers around 50 percent, it is obvious that many people do not consider this symbolism when they get married. As for the third finger of the left hand . . . I don’t know where that came from. However, in some other cultures, it is different. Germans wear their wedding rings on the right hand, for example.
