They walk around Mecca cause it is believed that is what their prophet, Muhammad, did. Kaaba is the holiest shrine in Islam and they reenact the Prophet’s journey to Mecca. It has to be done at a certain time that is why the numbers are so ‘astounding’. It is one of the five Pillars of Islam (along with fasting during Ramadan, prayer, charity and profession of faith), the hajj is required of all who can manage it at least once in a lifetime.
