I think the current dating norms here allow us to experiment without much societal disapproval. A friend of mine attended an Indian wedding ceremony last week, and he and I talked about how strange and scary it would be to marry a complete stranger – but that is an Indian custom. To the Indian couple getting wed, it would probably be more strange and scary to date around and risk pregnancy by having casual sex. What are the consequences? Well, dating and sex are fun and interesting, and multiple relationships have helped me understand different types of people, how to resolve conflict, and how to be intimate. On the other hand, I’ve been through a lot of heartbreak, I don’t easily trust men, and most of my female friends have had at least one abortion. In spite of the problems, I prefer the freedom of experimentation because it is just that–freedom–and I’m not ready to marry or have children (though I hope to someday when I find the person who is exactly right for me). I’m waiting for true love.
