    I agree that the diet argument is rubbish. If it was true, people from the Cajun parts of the South, parts of Texas, Koreans, Thai people, some Latin Americans, etc. would grow a reputation for similarly bad body odor. I agree that hygiene and maybe geographical customary practices are the main reasons for this persistent body odor. Perhaps, a chronic-shortage of fresh water existed where people came from — a problem that likely occurs for a majority of the world. Coming from that sort of background, you develop a pattern of behavior that doesn’t apply here in the US, but because it was instilled since childhood, the pattern is hard to break. Someone I knew in college had this issue and once he began bathing regularly, the odor dissappeared immediately. He was no longer avoided by all — which is highly noticeable within a college dorm environment.
