I first consciously realized that I was gay when I was 12. But I had the feelings long before that. When I was about 4 or 5, my dad used to take me swimming at a local community pool. I would always get a kind of fluttery feeling in the pit of my stomach when we went into the locker room to change. I was entranced by the sight of so many naked men and boys. I had no idea why. I’d make up excuses, like having to go to the bathroom, to go back in the locker room just to sneak another look. Later on, I was on a swim team and was always looking at the other boys, particularly the older, more developed ones. I scoured my parents’ copies of National Geographic for articles on primitive tribes, because sometimes they would have pictures of naked or semi-naked men. They had a couple of coffee-table books on the art of the Greeks and Romans which were also great sources for pictures of nude male statues. I’m sure my parents thought I was either a budding anthropologist or art historian. 🙂 Pictures of naked women always left me indifferent. I also had a number of crushes which were always on either other boys in my classes or older males such as coaches, teachers, etc. I had heard words like ‘gay’ and ‘fag’ but only had a really vague idea of what they meant. When I was 12 I went to camp and one of the other naive kids asked a counselor what ‘gay’ meant. He said that it meant a boy who liked other boys in the same way that most boys like girls. That’s when it hit me point-blank. ‘Wow’, I thought, ‘that’s what I am’. In sex-ed classes in junior we were told that some of us might not have feelings of attraction for the opposite sex right then, but that we would develop them eventually. Well, I waited for this to happen. It never did. But my feelings for other males just got stronger, and their precise nature more obvious.
