If you think the Netherlands has no ethnic diversity, then obviously you have never been there. I have, and it is one of the most diverse nations in the world. For decades the Netherlands has welcomed immigrants from all over the world, and a simple stroll down a city street there makes that quite apparent. Even my Dutch relatives have commented on how there seems to be a lot of people from other parts of the world living in their country. As well, here in Canada we pride ourselves on being ethnically diverse, and we are certainly more socially advanced than the United States. In my opinion, ethnic diversity contributes to social advancement. Because no one group is totally dominant, laws and social practices must be designed to accommodate everyone, and such laws/practices tend to be permissive rather than restrictive. As for Vermont, it seems to be an exception. I would never have guessed that a mostly ethnically-European state would be so socially progressive.
