Actually, New York has had far fewer terrorist incidents than cities such as London, Paris, and Tel Aviv. However, the latest incident is by far the worst act of terrorism in human history. Why did it happen? Good question. Some militant Islamic extremists have taken to using the west, and America in particular, as a scapegoat for all their problems (poverty, powerlessness, etc.) for many complicated reasons. America’s secular, money-driven society is offensive to them. Allies humiliated Iraq in the Gulf War. New York and its skyscrapers symbolize western capitalism and power. The result will likely be a protracted effort to find and destroy terrorism, using military, law enforcement, and diplomatic means. With the cooperation of all countries, the effort may succeed after a long time.
