RickMemberRespect must be earned. Hmmm. No doubt some wisdom here, but what of respect for strangers? What has happened to manners? The sorry state we are in was made more noticeable to me than ever when I recently returned to (upstate) New York from London. Imagine, there, even the youngsters uttered such words as ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ Then there was the absence of cursing in public, which I didn’t even notice until my return to the States, where it is so ubiquitous it has become meaningless.

RickMemberI’ve often wondered this myself. I’ve only met one other person who truly found no humor in someone elses misfortune. Those home videos where we are supposed to laugh when a man falls off a ladder, or some other potentially dangerous situation, poignantly points out our diminished capacity for compassion and empathy. More people need to stand up and challenge the brutes.

RickMemberSo how should we wimpy whites respond to disrespect? Why, disrespectfully, of course. Yeah, that sounds wise. Don’t worry, John, from the sounds of it, I’m sure you’re not a wimp.
