Ranjit SinghMemberNow, I believe the question was ‘are East Indians racist?’ Well of course some are racist because of what their parents told them, i.e. bad things about black people. For example, ‘Don’t go outside, some Black person might get you!’ Of course, racism can also come from experience. I’ve had a lot of bullies in high school who happened to be Black. I observed many Asians who were teased by Black people making fun of their language. So anybody can be a racist, whether it be from what your parents told you or what you yourself experienced.

Back in the days in India(1500’s or so) only the elite Mughal (Muslim) leaders were allowed to wear the turban because of their elite status. The Sikhs adopted the turban but wore it in a different style than the Muslims. Maharaja (King) Ranjit Singh of Punjab would give prizes to his men who tied the best turban. Along with keeping our hair clean and nicely tied and covered, we are not allowed to cut our hair because its growing is a part of nature. Of course, with this long hair, we should have enough manners to neatly tie it up and cover it with a turban (the crown that helps us stand out). Bottom line, the turban is our religious identity as a people. So to answer the concern about if Punjabi Sikh men would be embarassed if asked to remove their turban–My people have struggled long enough to earn the right to wear the turban even in India in public office. It is our religious right to wear the turban, we have earned it.
