I’m glad that someone else has asked this question. When I first found this web site this was the first question I wanted to ask. My wife was a waitress for a number of years and had exactly the same experience. Blacks consistently gave very bad tips or no tips at all. To make matters worse, black women were often the most demanding and rude people she had to wait on. Constant complaints that the pop was flat (side note on race – apparently blacks don’t often order colas) or making special requests for the meal after it was served, i.e. ‘oh, I didn’t want mayo on this.’ Or one person asks for a refill, she brings it, then another person asks for a refill, she brings it, then another… And when the bill came the black patrons would always act surprised and try to argue about extras they had ordered. If the menu says bleu cheese is fifty cents extra, they shouldn’t act shocked when they’re asked to pay for it. And yes, she gave everyone the same quality service to everyone regardless of whether or not she expected good, bad or no tips. There were white ‘regulars’ that never tipped, but they still got the same service too. My theory is that blacks feel that this is a time when they temporarily have power over whites, and use it as an opportunity for minor retribution. Apparently religious people are also notoriously bad tippers. That is, assuming well-dressed people who go out to eat mid Sunday morning are religious. Or maybe they think that leaving religious tracts is tip enough.

In response to the first question, I have to say that I’ve generally heard those statements directed to people who are complaining about the country. More of a ‘if you don’t like it, get out’ attitude than a ‘this is my country, not yours’ attitude. I have heard these comments made from whites to whites also. I find your second question more interesting. I feel that that kind of sentiment is going to be around as long as there is a Black vs. White vs. Hispanic vs. etc. mentality in this country. Thinking of another group as just that, a group, will keep you in the mindset of lumping them all together. Your saying ‘when a person of another race commits a crime, whites just think that race as a whole is deviant’ is, in fact, doing exactly what you are accusing whites of doing. Say a black man commits a crime. Then say that a white person jumps up and yells ‘blacks are criminals.’ You’re doing the equivalent of jumping up and yelling ‘whites are racist’ Believe me, there are just as many white people sitting at home thinking the the black criminal must have had a messed-up childhood, as there are blacks sitting at home not committing crimes. As I was saying earlier, as long as it’s an ‘Us vs. Them’ attitude in this country their will always be people who concentrate on the color of someone’s skin instead of the content of their character.
