While not all Christians in the United States are extremists, many are ‘closet extremists.’ You will not find them picketing on a corner, but they will boycott a major corporation with a whisper from the leader of their church. If you are not a Christian of some sort (many include Catholicism as Christian) then you are obviously crazy and are going to burn in eternal damnation, they say. Christians in the South (generally) are very intolerant of others’ ways.

I lived in San Diego for six and a half years, and I can honestly tell you that when I first arrived, I had no idea what a Filipino person even looked like. I am a very tolerant person, but some things tend to get on one’s nerves. At the commissary, a lot of the Filipinos would almost literally be ready to fight over an item if it was the last one on the shelf. While I realize that this is probably an individual person’s problem, I think it is indicative of other things. I feel that many immigrants are here to find a better life, or to be with their spouse, which is fine with me. The only real problem I have is when they refuse to realize that this is America, and things may not be done the same way here as they were in there homeland. I have heard immigrants gripe about our government, and that makes me mad for obvious reasons.

I was active duty for 10 years and was raised with the same belief that you have about it being in poor taste to go around talking about your earnings. I think the problem is that in the military, people of the same grade and rank make the same (low) amount of money, so it is often a subject of discussion. It is surprising to note, however, that many civilians often come right out and ask about our pay. I would never ask a person what they earn. Military people are paid by taxpayers, so salary is a matter of public record. Also, many people feel they have a right to know how their tax money is being spent.

I seem to have read an article about this very thing at some point. Evidently during the Ellis Island era of immigration to the United States, many Italian people arrived illegally, or “Without Papers (WOP).”

That is a reference to color of skin, as in an eggplant has a black peel. I believe the Italian slang for “black person” is “moulie,” which comes from the word for eggplant.
