I live in Japan and have done judo at a high school club here. Martial arts are not compulsory school subjects, but many practice kendo, judo and shurinji kempo at the high school or club level. Sumo is the national sport like football in the United States. Martial arts here are practiced here not only for enjoyment but for instilling discipline, perserverance and teamwork. Teams train almost religiously, rather than simply having fun. The police are known to practice judo to improve fitness in their free time.
