PaintedBirdParticipantA tradition within Islam is that men should cover their heads. Gulf Arabs and Iraqis tend to wear either all-white or red-and-white-checked ghutras. Some Egyptians and Palestinians prefer black-and-white checked head coverings, or none at all. Some men in Lebanon and Syria, mostly old villagers, still wear the tarboush (fez). It’s mainly a matter of personal preference, with a little cultural identity thrown in. In secular Arab societies, more men go bareheaded. As far as I know, the color doesn’t matter. The material does, though. They’re always cotton, since it’s considered unmanly to wear silk.
