NicoleParticipantI find it interesting how many people still believe this stereotype. There is an article by linguist Dale Spender (“The Writing or the Sex: Why you don’t have to read women’s writing to know it’s no good”) in which she studied the misconception of the talkative woman. This was not the original purpose of her work, but her research showed a large descrepancy of equal talk time in conversations between male and female colleagues of equal position. None of the women spoke for more than 42 percent of the conversation, and in the groups where the women spoke for more than 38 percent, the men felt they had not had a fair share of the conversation. I would hardly say speaking for less than half of a conversation makes a woman “talkative,” but then, isn’t it all about our perceptions?

NicoleParticipantThis is an interesting hypothesis that isn’t too much different from one regarding the fate of Homo Sapiens Neandertalenis (Neanderthal man, a hominid species that developed from Europe). It is supposed that Homo Sapiens Sapiens may have interbred with Homo Sapiens Neandertalenis until the genetically superior species took over. Extinction by absorbion. Perhaps light skin and hair are leftover genetic traits of this interbreeding, and Asian features are the result of interbreeding with the indigenous early hominids of Asia. Just a hypothesis. To the best of my knowledge, no evidence of a hybrid has been discovered.

NicoleParticipantMy mother is a German national and the only member of her family to live outside of Germany. Generally, my feelings toward these Neo-Nazi groups is anger. By and large, they do not have a German background, so how dare they try to claim my heritage (the good and the bad)? They do not understand the complexity of that heritage and the baggage that goes along with it (my grandfather was a pilot for the Nazi military, yet my great-grandfather was thrown in a concentration camp for hiding Jews in his home). I am offended by the actions and stupidity of these people and do not appreciate the use of my heritage for their bigotry.
