To be a Jew can mean someone who is a follower of Judaism, but it also can mean a person who is decended from the ancient Hebrews. For centuries, and still even today, many Jewish people only marry within their faith. Therefore, in most cases, they are marrying within their race. You can be a Christian and a Jew, one being your faith and one being your ethnicity, respectively. I’m not Jewish, but this is my understanding. Please e-mail me or respond if I am misinformed.

Hindus wear a tilak, also called a bindi, (a red dot by women and an elongated dot by men)on their foreheads, between the two eyes .This point is known by various names such as Ajna chakra, spiritual eye and Third eye is said to be the major nerve in human body, in ancient times. Yes bindis can just be decorative and are becoming more and more absorbed into fashion, but they still have religous and cultural significance to Indians and/or Hindus.

Charles de Gaulle said, ‘Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first, nationalism, when hatred for people other than your own comes first.’ This is the best explanation of patriotism and its differences from nationalism that I have ever encountered. Indeed the line between the two is frighteningly thin and hazy, this is why I approach patriotism with a high degree of apprehension. Patriotism too often leads to nationalism; case in point, Nazi Germany. I see the post September 11 patriotism as being rooted in nationalism, people are more interested in killing the ‘bad guys’ then helping their own nation. Both patriotism and nationalism are detremental because they keep humanity divided. Rather than thinking of ourselves only as Americans, French, or Japanese, we should think of oursleves as human. Rather than thinking how we can help our nation, we should think how we can best help humanity as a whole.

I understand the way you feel. All of America is struggling to cope with recent events. But America must not go lose site of its deepest values in light of these events. Protecting its citizens is a fundamental concern of any government, but this protection is so much more than radiating envelopes and fighting wars in far off nations. Government, ours especially, has an obligation to protect its citizens from itself. Government must has an obligation to protect its citizens from oppression and tyranny, both foreign and domestic. Freedom, America’s foremost and most underlying value, must not be superceded by national security. And by the way, who tells you who ‘they ‘ are? Are ‘they’ the communists, the Democrats, the Republicans, the Russians, the Chinese? Too many times defending America from ‘them’ has resulted in needless violence and bloodshed (The Vietnam War, The Cold War, McCarthyism, ect). I for one refuse to let my nation revert back into times like those previously mentioned, does that make me one of ‘them’?
