I was reared to believe that my family was upper class because of bloodlines and intellectual achievement. Since I reject the ‘good blood’ argument, I am left with the idea that class has to do with how one uses one’s mind. I have also met a lot of very high-class people who don’t have much education, but who top the scales on measures of character, honesty, tolerance, kindness and honor. Now that’s classy.

It is sadly true that some people are tacky, but that is not limited to low incomes. I know a lot of nouveau riche folks who make me squirm.
