There are different skin colors because in an area with less sunlight, a dark-skinned person will get a disease called Rickets, which causes the bones to deteriorate. It can get so bad that the bones break at the smallest little impact. This is due to the fact that the skin produces Vitamin D. Before the days of modern vitamins, this was one of the only ways to get Vitamin D. A light-skinned person in such an area does not have this problem. Also, light-skinned people will get skin cancer in an area with strong sunshine.
