MichaelParticipantMaybe you’re hanging around the wrong men. People who belittle others generally tend to focus on those they perceive as weakest in order to (in their minds) mark their social status as higher in rank. To the men you’re speaking of, women are the lower social order – unless you throw in blacks or us queers. Maya Angelou, speaking at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Houston, said it best (and I’m paraphasing): ‘I am too old to suffer such foolishness. I walk away, but not before letting the fool know why. If you don’t let them know why you’re leaving, they won’t be able to associate their foolishness with any consequences. Worse! They might actually think you agree with them. Do not suffer – and do not be silent.’

MichaelParticipantHere we go again with the explain why we shouldn’t just lump gays, lesbians and bisexuals with the pedophiles & zoophiles… let me see if I can break this down for you. Sexual contact requires consent otherwise it is rape. Children are not capable of consent as they are too young to understand what is happening. Animals (sorry PETA folks!) are not sentient and therefore incapable of consenting. Homosexual activity (or bisexual) happens between consenting adults. So from a moral, ethical and just plain ‘it’s wrong’ standpoint, we’re talking apples & oranges. Oh — one other thing: Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals have LIVES not lifestyles… and all crime is not hate.

MichaelParticipantWhy are straight people straight? And why do they like anal sex and fisting? (I’ve seen the magazines and web sites.)
Being gay is about more than the sexual act. It’s about your entire emotional (and sexual) resonance being with members of your own gender. As to sexual likes and dislikes, a simple check of the spam in my e-mail account shows a bewildering array of behaviors – hetero, homo and all-sorts of sexual – none of which has anything to do with anything.
When straight people focus on the ‘act,’ it’s usually part of a pattern of denigration toward the gay person. The first step is to discount the relationship as something that’s only sexual (and perverse or damaged), which knocks them down a notch on the social order, which then makes rationalizing about bashing them all the easier. It’s especially bad when someone secretly harbors a sexual response and their internalized homophobia causes a violent lashing out.

MichaelParticipantWhy should we? It’s not possible to change your orientation. You’re born that way. So-called ‘reparative’ therapy has been thoroughly debunked — and is only kept alive by the religious right as a way to scare ignorant people into giving more money. Maybe your question should be ‘Should heterosexuals try to change their orientation?’ — given the high rates of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and apparent inability to form lasting commitments (see divorce rates), not to mention bad fashion habits, wouldn’t you rather be gay?

MichaelParticipantTo most (open-minded, non-moralist) straight people, GLBT folks are something of sexual ‘adventurers’ — and as with most other cultural things, tend to push the envelope. Witness nipple piercings. Once kinky, now mainstream. Most straight men would never admit that they enjoy a little prostate massage during oral sex and most straight women would probably never think of it if they didn’t ask a gay man how to give the ultimate oral performance.
