Melanie-HoseyParticipantMy Background: Christian school K-12 and a BA of Biblical studies. I agree with R.P. of Ft. Wayne, IN but would like to add another possible explanation. Nicodemus was a religious leader whose very title of Pharisee meant that he strictly adhered to both the written and oral law given through Moses. He was notably confused at the idea of getting to heaven by any other way than good works. Christ was attempting to explain to him that it was only faith in Christ’s payment for his sin that could actually get him there. (John 3:15-17) Many people are still confused by this concept, but Romans 2:8-9 is very clear on the subject ‘For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.’
