I am actually guilty of exactly what I was criticize you for doing. The supposed quote from the Koran is not ‘Kill all infidiels wherever you may find them’ but rather ‘Fight and slay the pagans wherever you find them…'(Surah 9:5) This may seem like a meaningless distinction, but the second one can also be interpreted to fighing the inner pagan (as in wherever you find them, inculding yourself). My point remains the same though. Obscure quotes cannot be taken out of context and be taken at face value. As put by Bernard Haykell, Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at New York University: ‘It is true that the Koran contains verses that are antagonistic to Jews, Christians and non-Muslims. That said, the Koran also has verses that are positive and favorable to Christians and Jews. It is important to know that the Koran cannot be interpreted without the knowledge of the wider body of legal and theological Islamic literature. Verses don’t stand on their own without context, and the context is always much more nuanced and sophisticated than the literal meaning of the verse.’ Well the same can be said about the Christianity and the New Testament; and, in this case, Judiasm and the Talmud.
