Well, the United States is the only effective superpower around, at least for now. Because of this, it has a profound political and cultural effect on the whole world. Many smaller countries (France, for example), nations, groups, etc. feel their culture and way of life are threatened by this overwhelming American influence. And, maybe Americans (at least some of them) really are a bit self-centered and even ignorant, given this superpower status of their mighty nation.
