I am married to an Americanized East Indian, and ever since 9/11, he has been treated terribly. He had to apply to more than 350 jobs before finally getting hired after two years. He has been pulled over by the police for doing nothing wrong. I will not even go into how awful our neighbors have treated us, other than total and all-out, non-stop slander and harassment. If I could only count the times we have been asked about the origin of his name (‘What kind of name is that? Where are you from?’) And going through an airport? No thanks, we’ll drive… The blame for 9/11 in my opinion stems from the racist attitudes of a portion of uneducated ‘white’ America that existed before 9/11 but is now more widely accepted with the current political atmosphere.
