I am from a family where my mother speaks another language in addition to english and when she is speaking to my grandmother or to her sisters, she is constantly switching between the two. I know that in her case, it just depends on the flow of the conversation and I am tempted to beleive that that is probably the same thing with the students at your school. Now, don’t get me wrong, there is a possibility that they don’t want you to hear what they are talking about but don’t stress, if it’s that bad, you probably didn’t want to hear it anyway.
