They did do that in some places. Keep in mind that Chinese movies aren’t necessarily accurate, and that China has very diverse peoples. I think that was my grandmother’s generation and earlier. She’s like 80 now. I’ve seen it in old photographs; it hasn’t been practiced for 50 years.
