For hundreds (probably even thousands) of years, women were expected to be 'pure' when entering marraige. The reason for this was mainly that males were more possessive of females and considered them property. Women were and are expected to be completely devoted to their husbands, but the men don't have to return the favor because they have different 'needs.' An additional reason for men preferring purity in women may also have been that they don't want to be compared to their old partners. So all these small-minded stances from the past explain why we still have these sexist opinions.
