Most Christians believe in hellfire and damnation, not because they can scripturally prove it, but because it is commonly taught in the churches. Truth is, hell is a pagan concept used in the Dark Ages to scare people into religion. The word “hell” in the Bible is a mistranslation of the Hebrew “Sheol” and Greek “Hades,” which is better translated “grave.” The truth is also that, if God sent Jesus Christ to die for the sins of everyone and to redeem all to God, either He accomplished that fully, or He failed. I choose to believe the scriptures teaching that He did not fail in that mission. All shall come to know Him, not forcefully, not out of fear. I have been a Christian almost all of my life & have been preaching almost 30 years now, and I find the love of God to be all-encompassing. There is no hell or damnation.

I was once a leader within the extremist hate movement that twisted the words of Christ and the Bible to justify my hatred and use of violence – to the point that I almost committed the largest domestic terrorist act in history in 1984. Fortunately I was rescued from that horrible mentality in 1985. Our group used the Bible in order to justify our illegal actions. That was wrong. I discovered that people in the movement hate because it is easier for someone to hate and blame others for their situation in life than it is to take responsibility to change what is wrong in their lives. The violence stems from the anger within for their disillusionment in life and is directed to whomever they blame for that lot in life. Christ is love, not hate. Unfortunately we are sometimes slow to realize that. For my story, see http://www.hopeful-sojourner.com
