From a social psychological perspective, it is because blondes are actually fairly rare – even for white people (though you would never know it with all the fakes these days). The less available a thing is, the more people tend to want it (in this case men). Women dye their hair because they are desperate for male attention. The thing is, it usually works. The stereo -typed blond is generally ‘an easy lay.’ This actually holds truer for bleach blondes than true blondes since the whole reason they do it is to get attention (they wont admit this of course). So men go went for blonds because they were rare, they go for blonds because blond hair these days is like a big neon sign saying ‘I’ll do anything you want if only you pay attention to me!’ Red hair is even rarer than blond hair.
