KarlMemberYes indeed, there is a double standard. Another thing that bugs me about the medical folks is where else do they do what they do before discussing the price? This applies to dentists as well, perhaps even more. It is worse at the hospital, where they offer things you latter discover on your bill. Sure, sometimes time is of the essense and you can’t stop to name a price. But that applies only to trauma care.

KarlMemberThere is a fad nature at play, or at least there was some 12 years ago. I was living in Southern California when my lover of five years died suddenly from a heart attack. Many times gay people, learning I had just lost my partner, were very anxious to offer sympathy until they learned it was not from AIDS. Then they lost all interest in me or my feelings.

KarlMemberI’m an American living in Europe. I know both sides of this, and it fascinates me. Americans do it their way because they think that is the ‘proper’ way. After all, Emily Post said so. She wrote the book on manners. Most Americans have no idea that Europe does it different. The roots of this are probably a way used to denigrate newer immigrants in America.

KarlMemberCell phones can be irritating, so some people finally started saying something about it. Then come the people who just look for any opportunity to tell another person how they should behave. If talking is allowed, so should a phone be – assuming the objection is about talking and not about ringing. Cell phones ringing in restaurants is rude. Talking at normal volume is not, unless it means you ignore people at your table. The situation described on a bus is absurd. If someone on the bus was irritated, that was their problem.

KarlMemberGoodness! Was that movie intended to be historically accurate? I thought it was merely having fun, so I enjoyed it accordingly. I had never heard it said the Bard was gay, but it is no surprise to hear it suggested. The movie was still fun.

KarlMemberI live in Germany but am an American. Here dogs are nearly everywhere except restaurants. It always seems weird to me when I see them in department stores. Amazingly, this rarely seems to cause any problems whatever. German dogs are much differently behaved than American dogs. They nearly always ignore strangers. I miss other people’s dogs being friendly as I like them.

KarlMemberIn Germany one answers the phone by saying who you are and the caller then says who they are. Now I am an American living here. My parents were strict about phone rules and we were taught to not identify ourselves, and I tend to agree. If you call my phone, you either know who I am or you have no business knowing. The latter rule though I like, although I also enjoy violating it when calling friends. I enjoy calling people I haven’t talked to in awhile and seeing how long they take before they know its me.

KarlMemberThe law and good sense both go against the managers. Breaks are good business because they enhance productivity and alertness. Skipping lunch is also unhealthy and, for some people, dangerous.

KarlMemberI have a passion for maps. I am good at their use. But when driving, it is often much easier to ‘turn left at the 7-11’ than it is to ‘turn north on Maple Road’. Maple Road may or may not have an easily visible sign, and I may or may not have a clear idea of compass direction in any given place. In LA, the signs tend to be good. Other places they are missing or small. Reading small signs is a dangerous distraction while driving a pile of steel in traffic!

KarlMemberPeople are afraid of rejection. A woman or man in a wheelchair may be attractive, but that doesn’t mean someone is going to ask for a date. Especially if one fears a strong rejection. And perhaps some people would fear being considered ‘sick’ for being attracted to a disabled person. Or that they might be accused of offering out of sympathy. It all becomes easier to just look elsewhere for a date.

KarlMemberWho said flattery isn’t cool? Who said it is stupid and insulting? In some cultures, flattery is required! And what has that to do with the original question about the happiness of Canadian men? Cultures vary amazingly, even when they are otherwise similar. If an American asks ‘How are you’, you respond ‘Fine, thankyou’. Its polite. Ask the same of a German, be prepared for truth. It is just DIFFERENT. Neither is ‘stupid’. (American living in Germany)
