As a manager in a large company, I can tell you that I have observed the ‘downsizing’ or laying off of many employees to cut costs in the company. The result of less manpower on the job is increased hours and demand for the work to be done, and the remaining employees carry the load. It seems like it would be more expensive to pay people overtime instead of cutting jobs, but when you realize that by cutting jobs, the company saves on salaries, health insurance costs, workers comp insurance costs, etc., it is more cost-effective to ‘overwork’ the employees still on the job.
