I’m a Japanese woman and believe the term has discriminatory meanings. That’s only because the term was used in wartime, when Japan was dominated by the United States. I have been called, ‘Hey, Jap!’ with an unfriendly smile when I was a college student in the United States. It’s not important if the term has really discriminatory meanings, but what is important is how we, the Japanese, feel when we are called so.
