One theory that I’ve heard is that animosity developed during the immigration rushes of last century, primarily over resources. Both groups were competing for the same jobs, living spaces, etc. Also, both groups were scorned by ‘mainstream’ WASP-y society, and as often happens with marginialized groups, each sought to distinguish themselves and prove that they were better than the other group. That animosity probably continues, at least in part, today.
