    They indicate a woman is married. In some areas of India, married women also color the center parting of their hair. This is done with a powder. The dots—called bindi, I think—can be painted on (like nail polish) or can be actual stick-on dots. Usually red, but I remember seeing Indian Air stewardesses with dots in other colors to match their sarees.
