Probably because they think you’re more likely to have sex, and have it faster, with an older guy. I think there’s a general assumption that when girls date older men they’re more likely to be sexual, which probably has your parents a little freaked out. So, they’re probably trying to discourage you so you won’t find yourself in a bad situation with pregnancy or anything like that. As someone who has always dated older guys (generally 3-5 years older), I can say that there are benefits and problems. Older guys generally do want to initiate sexual relationships earlier than younger ones, but at 16 most any guy you date will probably be looking to advance the relationship relatively quickly. And someone who already has sexual experience might actually have a more respectful attitude than someone who is looking to lose their virginity. But wanting to get some, it’s human–specifically male–nature. The perks are that you generally get to be with someone who is more mature and interesting than some of the boys you may go to school with. Anyway, the important thing is that you take care of yourself and make sure he doesn’t have the upper hand just because he’s older. Make sure it’s a balanced relationship and he’s not too mature for you, and you should be fine.
