Jeremy R.ParticipantThe Church of Latter Day Saints does not own part of Coke. That’s one of the more stupid urban legends. I’m sure Warren Buffet would be surprised to hear that Mormons own part of HIS company. Berkshire Hathaway holds 200 million shares, or 8 percent of the company, a stake valued at $11 billion. Atlanta’s Emory University has Coca-Cola holdings amounting to $3 billion. That said, 1 percent is worth around $1.5 billion. No, the LDS Church is not THAT wealthy.
Now, there are a lot of things that you’ll hear from ‘Mormons.’ I’ll be the first to say that I don’t speak for the LDS Church. However, I also don’t try to justify my behavior. It is against Mormon doctrine to disobey God. It is pretty simple, really. Paul said it best: “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that OBEY him;” (Hebrews 5:9)
Why Mormons can’t drink coffee, tea, coke, and other products has such a simple answer: God said not to. Does it have to be spelled out in the Doctrine and Covenants (where the Word of Wisdom is found)? Nope. Is it the caffeine? No. Acids? No. Is it because it can be addictive? No. Is it because it rots teeth? Not that, either. Is it OK because it isn’t a ‘hot drink?’ No. Coke is against the Word of Wisdom. Why? Because God said so. And He’s God. He gets to say that. That’s the benefit of being Deity. God also said don’t lie. God didn’t explain Himself to Moses. He just said ‘no.’ Why does there have to be justification? No one questions why Jews don’t eat pork. Why do people question why Mormons don’t drink Coke?
